About 150 junior high school students from five Catholic schools competed Sept. 29 in a rare, Catholic-school-only cross-country running competition at Veteran’s Park in Watertown. When the cheering was over and the dust had settled, Colleen Iannone of St. John the Evangelist School, Watertown, was the winner in the girls’ race, and Eric Prates of Our Lady of Mount Carmel School, Waterbury, took first place in the boys’ race. Miss Iannone ran the 1.86-mile track in 13:58, and Mr. Prates ran it in 12:11. Both are eighth-graders. Other schools competing were Blessed Sacrament and St. Mary’s, Waterbury, and St. Mary Magdalen, Oakville. Denis O’Sullivan, boys’ coach for St. John’s, said he started the cross-country running program there about 15 years ago in an attempt to give all students an opportunity to compete in sports.(Photos by Jack Sheedy)
