St. Mary-St. Michael School in Derby opened on Aug. 29 to 139 pupils, more than twice as many students as it had in July 2010. When parents realized that the school could be closed because of declining enrollment, they formed a task force to rally the community and create a financial plan to save the school. By this time last year, parents said the debt was minimal and enrollment was up to 98 students. (Photos by Mary Chalupsky)
